If you’re anything like me, you’ll definitely be striving to live to see 100 and, hopefully, to witness the end of the world whilst you’re at it. Living a long and healthy life is the dream of every one us, if only it wasn’t so difficult. Keeping a clean bill of health isn’t just about eating an apple here and a banana there. Neither is it gained through rigorous workouts and reading fitness magazines alone. For the most part, being healthy is achieved by taking a holistic approach which encompasses all aspects. That means working out, prescribing to a healthy diet, taking helpful supplements where necessary, getting enough rest and going for regular medical check-ups.

1. Eating A Balanced Diet

What exactly do dietitians mean when they talk about eating a balanced diet? Well, basically it means eating foods that contain adequate amounts of essential food nutrients. For example, we’re looking at:

* Proteins. The building blocks of the human body that are responsible for maintaining cell growth and repair. They’re derived from meats, beans and nuts.

* Vitamins. To prevent the onset of disease. Fruits and vegetables are the main sources of vitamins. So oranges boost the body’s resistance to diseases by strengthening the immune system, carrots are good for the eyes and leafy vegetables contain roughage, which is excellent for digestion.

2. Refrain From Smoking And Alcohol

Smoking not only causes lung cancer, but it also causes heart disease. That means, no matter what you do -be it exercise and eating healthy- you’ll always be taking 2 steps back because smoking will kill you eventually. In the same breath, alcohol shouldn’t be taken in excess as it causes loss of appetite and throws your diet off balance.

3. Stay Active

Cardio shouldn’t be restricted to the gym. Things as simple as walking to the shopping mall or to work, doing household chores, small scale gardening and landscaping are all it takes to get a fair dose of exercise. But if you are always driving and assigning work to the gardener, how else are you going to avoid getting fat. This is not to say you should sell your car, or fire the maid. Simply put, keep that adrenaline pumping and you won’t have to drag yourself out of bed everyday for the early morning jog we’ve all come to loathe over the years.
